The Pontiglio Winery is situated in the south of Corfu, near the village of Lefkimmi. The winery specializes in wines from unique Corfiote varieties of grapes, named Kakotrigis, Petrokoritho, and Skopelitiko.
The family-run business was founded in 2014, and the name Pontiglio is a Venetian word meaning ‘determination’. The name is a reference to the determination to continue the old tradition of wine-making as the vineyards started disappearing in the 1980s. The Pontiglio Winery now owns 60 acres of land and continues to preserve abandoned vineyards in the southern region of Corfu.
The Pontiglio Winery also houses a small museum where you can learn more about the old traditions of wine-making, which date back as far as antiquity. Here, you can see a collection of historical tools that were used for the wine-making process.
The winery also organizes tours for small groups, during which you get the opportunity to see the production facilities and wine cellar, walk through the vineyards, and taste some of the wine varieties accompanied by local snacks. They also hold cooking classes. Bookings for these experiences can be made on their website.
The winery is open for visitors between April and October.
