The People’s Garden is a small public park located between the Palace of St. Michael and St. George and the Mandrakina Church on the corner of Spianada Square in Corfu Town.
The garden was built in 1833 and was initially only accessible to the nobles who enjoyed its beauty and serenity. Public access to the park and a name change to “People’s Garden” were celebrated with an event on 21 May 1984.
The People’s Garden is a nice little getaway from the bustling town and offers great views of the Old Fortress, Faliraki Beach, and the small island of Vido. Inside the garden, there are often exhibitions of the Municipal Art Gallery of Corfu which is located in the adjacent Palace of St. Michael and St. George.
On the right side of the garden you can find the so-called “Queen Ladder”, an aerial staircase made of wrought iron which was used by the Greek royal family to go down Faliraki Beach. The staircase is no longer accessible due to safety reasons, but it’s still a popular backdrop for selfies and wedding photo shoots.
