The Nymfes Waterfall is located just outside the picturesque village of Nymfes in northern Corfu. With a height of almost 15 meters, it is the largest and one of the most spectacular waterfalls on the islands. The mountainous scenery of Mount Pantokrator, with beautiful green scenery, makes it the perfect getaway to enjoy the tranquillity of nature.
The area of the Nymfes Waterfall looks like something out of a fairy tale so it’s no surprise that it has been associated with mythology. According to a legend, people moved to the area to escape the vulnerable coast which was often under attack from pirates. They felt safe in the mountainous area due to the existence of fairies. These fairies, or nymphs, who were bathing in the emerald waters, gave them protection. So the village and the waterfall were named after the nymphs.
Visiting The Nymfes Waterfall
The Nymfes Waterfall can be visited for free at any time since there are no opening times. However, you might be surprised to see no water at all here in the summer. Although Corfu sees lots of rain throughout the year, summers are usually hot and dry and in recent years extended periods of drought have caused the waterfall to dry up completely in the summer. So the best time to visit the waterfall is in the spring or fall.
How To Get To The Nymfes Waterfall
The Nymfes Waterfall is located about 2 kilometers outside the village of Nymfes and can be reached by foot, with your own transportation like a rental car or scooter, or with an organized tour. There is no public transport to the waterfall, but you can take Green Bus lines A3, A8, A11, or A17 to Nymfes and walk from there.
The road from the village to the waterfall is asphalted and you can simply park besides the road once you see the sign of the waterfall. From there you have to climb down the stairs to reach the bottom of the waterfall.
