Mavromatis is a famous brand of kumquat liquor and other kumquat products, like sweets, cosmetics, and more. The Mavromatis Kumquat Factory is located in the village of Felekas, about 15 kilometers northwest of Corfu Town.
Mavromatis Kumquat was established in 1965, soon after the first kumquat trees were imported from China to Corfu. With its hot summers and wet, but mild winters, the island has the perfect climate for growing this tiny citrus fruit. The kumquat has since become the typical fruit of Corfu and the basis for liquor and other products.
Mavromatis produces over 1 million bottles of kumquat liquor and over 50 tonnes of other products each year, but it is still a family business. Apart from the regular kumquat liquor, the alcoholic product range includes a cream liquor variation, limoncello, and ouzo. They also produce a non-alcoholic kumquat fizzy drink and a ginger beer.
Among the other products they make are candied kumquats, cookies, marmalade, spoon sweets, loukoumi, baklava, mandolata, fig pies, and cosmetics like face cream and body lotion.
The Mavromatis Kumquat Factory has a large shop where you can buy all the products straight from the factory. The great thing is that you can taste all of their products before you buy anything, and the staff will gladly answer all your questions about Kumquats and the products they make from them. In the shop, you can also find a selection of other typical Corfiote products like olive oil, olive wood products, and dried herbs. There is also a small exposition with historic tools that were once used in their factory.
