The Monument of the Union of the Ionian Islands is a memorial on Spianada Square in Corfu Town. The monument commemorates the union of Corfu and the other Ionian islands with the rest of Greece on 21 May 1864.
The monument consists of a number of circular stairs leading up to a stone base with a marble column in the center. The column bears the Greek inscription “Enosis 21 Maïou 1864” (United 21 May 1864).
Behind the column, seven smaller marble pieces representing the seven Ionian islands form a semi-circle around the main monument. Each one has a bronze plate with the coat of arms of one of the islands facing the central column: Cythera, Ithaca, Kefalonia, Corfu, Zakynthos, Paxos, and Lefkas.
Initially, the group of islands was called the Heptanese Islands (Seven Islands), but since the group actually also includes many smaller islands, they are now collectively called the Ionian Islands, after the sea in which they are located.
