The Metropolitan Church Of Spelaiotissa, or in full the Metropolitan Church of Our Lady Spelaiotissa and Saint Vlasios, is a Greek Orthodox church located in the historic center of Corfu Town.
The church was built in 1577 on the site of an older church that was dedicated to Saint Vlasios. The new church is now dedicated to Our Lady Spelaiotissa and Theodora Augusta, the Byzantine Empress who restored icons to churches after the period of Iconomachy. The relic of the Empress in the form of a silver shrine is kept inside the church.
The church can be described as an Ionian Royal three-aisled church with Renaissance-style elements. Its facade comprises two large arched windows and a circular skylight with special decorations. Fragments of the holy bema carry original Byzantine wall paintings that have been preserved.
In 1841 the church was designated as the Cathedral of Corfu. Every year on February 11th the Saints Vlasios and Theodora are celebrated at the church and on August 15th the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is celebrated as well.
