Mavroudis Olive Oil is an olive oil brand, factory, and museum in the village of Chlomatiana in southern Corfu. It is one of the largest olive oil producers and the museum has one of the most extensive collections of its kind on the island.
History Of Mavroudis Olive Oil
The history of olive oil extraction by the Mavroudis family goes back several generations, but it was in 1992 when two brothers decided to set up a new factory with the latest production technologies. The new Mavroudis factory was the first olive mill in Corfu to use the cold extraction process, which is considered healthier as it preserves more of the nutrients.
The company produces olive oil from around 2000 olive trees owned by the family and from around 800 trees of other local families and professional farmers.
The Mavroudis family is very keen on producing the highest quality olive oil and has received several awards for its top-quality products.
The Mavroudis Olive Oil Museum Tours
The museum is housed in a traditional stone building next to the modern factory. Mavroudis offers guided tours of the museum in which the history of olive oil production is explained. During the tour, you also learn how the methods and tools have evolved from the earliest equipment to the current modern facilities. The museum houses several historic olive mills and presses from different eras that were transported from nearby villages to the museum.
After the tour, you can taste the different types of olive oil, including some of the flavored ones.
