The Gate of Saint Nicholas is one of the four gates in the fortification walls of Corfu Town and is located on the northeastern side, near Faliraki Beach.
The New Venetian Fortress was built in 1576 by the Venetian authorities to protect Corfu against the Ottomans. Apart from the main fortress, other parts of the city were fortified as well including the area at Faliraki. Saint Nicholas Gate was constructed between 1576 and 1588 and provided access between the town and the sea. It was named after the Church of Saint Nicholas located there.
