The Corfu Donkey Rescue, located near the village of Doukades in central Corfu, is the only sanctuary for rescued donkeys on the island. The small farm was set up to give traumatized donkeys, who have usually been neglected or mistreated by their previous owners, a better life.
Donkeys have traditionally played a very important role as farm animals, and for transporting goods in Corfu, but over time, their usefulness has been drastically diminished because of modern farming tools and pickup trucks. Since many donkeys have become useless to their owners, they were either neglected or exported and sold for their meat.
In 2004, the Corfu Donkey Rescue was founded to help prevent the export, negligence, and mistreatment of donkeys and give them a peaceful place to retire with dignity instead. Over the years, more than 500 donkeys have already been rescued by the sanctuary.
Animal lovers and families with kids will definitely love a visit to the Corfu Donkey Rescue, where they can watch and pet the animals. Entrance is free, but donations are greatly appreciated to support their cause. The shelter is completely run by volunteers and funded by gifts and donations.
