The Church of Saints Basil and Stephen is an orthodox church in the historic center of Corfu Town, located close to the Church of the Virgin Mary of Foreigners and the Church of St. Ioannis the Precursor.
The church is estimated to have been built in the late 16th century and belonged to the shoemakers’ guild. The parishioners of the shoemakers’ guild used to donate money and those who died without children left their estates to the church. These estates included shops and houses, including the house of the famous composer Nikolaos Mantzaros, but also agricultural land. So part of the income of the church also came from the harvest of vineyards and olive groves.
The church is painted yellow on the outside and is richly decorated on both the outside and the inside. Nowadays the church has limited opening times, but if you happen to pass by at the right time, have a look at the luxury decorations inside, which include mogano wood carving.
