The Church of Saint Stephen is the only church on the island of Vido, near the east coast of central Corfu. The church is situated on the top of a hill overlooking the Ionian Sea and Corfu Town.
The history of the church dates back to around 80 AD, when the first version of the church was built by the apostles Jason and Sosipatros, who brought Christianity to Corfu. The apostles dedicated the church to Saint Stephen (Agios Stefanos).
Under French rule, the existing defensive structures of the island of Vido were strengthened, but also new military buildings were constructed for which materials were needed. Due to a lack of stone, the general decided to demolish the church.
When the island fell into the hands of the British, they demolished all the French buildings. Underneath the ruins of the Church of Saint Stephen, they found a mosaic floor and the foundations of an earlier church.
In 1929, the Patriarch Athenagoras built a new church in its place, but it was again demolished, this time by the Germans on October 10th, 1944. The church was later rebuilt again.
