The British Cemetery is a reminiscent of the British administration of Corfu, located on the San Salvatore Hill to the south of the historic center of Corfu Town.
The cemetery was founded when Corfu became a British Protectorate in 1814 as a place where British officials, soldiers, and their relatives could be buried. After Corfu reunited with the rest of Greece and the British retreated, it became a graveyard for families and their descendants who stayed on the island.
The British Cemetery is still in use and counts about 500 graves, among which you can recognize several war heroes from the First and Second World Wars and the 1946 Corfu Channel Incident. The cemetery is not a boring graveyard, but rather a landscaped garden with lots of trees and plants, and among the tombstones are some beautiful masterpieces.
