The Megali Ano Grava Cave, also called the Big Upper Cave, is situated at an altitude of 478 meters, near the village of Loutses in northern Corfu.
The entrance of the cave has an approximate width of 60 meters and a height of 15 meters. The main room has a length of 100 meters, a width of 70 meters, and a height of 60 meters. The surface is completely flat, but the roof is full of geologic formations. To the left of the main chamber, there are two 20-meter-long corridors with a width of 3 meters and a height of 3 meters, where you can see some impressive stalactites.
A fun fact is that rumors have been persistently going around that the cave must be connected with another cave via a deep underground water channel as locals have claimed that sheep sometimes disappear in one cave and reappear in the other. Although the cave has been studied several times since 1969, scientific evidence of such claim has never been found.
Visiting The Megali Ano Grava Cave
The cave is always open and can be visited for free. Do bring appropriate footwear as you have to climb down a steep path to the entrance and inside the cave it is also very slippery. Also don’t forget to bring insect repellent, because although the forestry area is beautiful, it’s full of mosquitoes as well.
How To Get To The Megali Ano Grava Cave
To get to the Megali Ano Grava Cave you need to organize your own transportation, like a rental car or scooter, or book an excursion. While the area is also great for hiking, you can drive very close to the entrance of the cave, but make sure to do this from the direction of Loutses or Anapaftiria as this is the only paved road. Once you’ve reached the end of the road you simply follow the marked path, and after a steep decline, you’ll reach the cave in about 10 minutes.
