Gardiki Castle is a Byzantine fortress near the village of Agios Mattheos in the southern part of Corfu. Together with Angelokastro Castle and Kassiopi Castle, it formed an important defensive triangle against attacks on the island during the pre-Venetian era. It is the only surviving medieval castle in the south of Corfu and it is now a tourist attraction.
History Of Gardiki Castle
Gardiki Castle dates from the 13th century and was probably built by the Desporate of Epirus of that time, Michael I Komnenos (also known as Michael I Angelos) or his son Michael II Komnenos. However, the area must have been inhabited long before that because during archaeological excavations, remains have been found that date to around 20,000 years BC, the Paleolithic era. The findings, which include stone hunter-gatherer tools and animal bones, are displayed at the Archaeological Museum of Corfu.
Traces have also been found that prove that an earlier ancient structure has been incorporated into the castle. The presence of frescoes suggests that it was a temple that was later converted into a chapel.
The castle was used as a shelter for the inhabitants of Corfu and played an important role in defending the island against attacks from pirates and later under Venetian rule against the conquering Ottomans, who never succeeded in controlling Corfu.
Visiting Gardiki Castle
Gardiki Castle is always open and can be visited for free. Although the castle has been partly restored to make it suitable for visiting, there is not a lot to see, but it is still worth a visit if you are in the area. Especially the interior of the castle is in a state of ruin, but the walls and entrance gate remain preserved. You can climb up the fortification walls for a magnificent view of the entire octogonal structure and the beautiful surroundings.
