The Kaiser’s Bridge is a historic footbridge that once connected the Achilleion Palace in Gastouri with the beach. The bridge was commissioned by the German Emperor “Kaiser” Wilhelm II who had bought the palace in 1907, hence the name Kaiser’s Bridge.
Carl Ludwig Sprenger, the horticulturist who was responsible for landscaping the gardens of the palace, also took care of the design and construction of the bridge. The bridge was built as a shortcut between the palace and the beach and was constructed as an arch over the road. During World War II, the main arch over the road was destroyed to allow larger military vehicles to pass, but the rest of the bridge remains preserved today. The monumental bridge is considered an important historical heritage.
