The Museum of the Corfu Philharmonic Society, also simply called the “Music Museum”, is located on the first floor of the building of the Philharmonic Society in the heart of the old town of Corfu.
History Of The Museum
The Corfu Philharmonic Society was established on 12 September 1840 by a team of well-educated Corfiots as the first music education organization in Greece. The institute quickly became very popular as it accepted students from all social classes and it has played an important role in the history of music in the country.
The Museum of the Corfu Philharmonic Society was opened in 2010 in honor of the long history of the institute and is dedicated to Nikolaos Halikiopoulos Mantzaros, the first artistic director of the society, a renowned composer, and writer of the Greek national anthem.
History Of The Museum Building
The building in which the museum is located is a typical Corfu palace and belonged to the Theotokis Family. It was also the birthplace of Georgios Theotokis (1795-1872), former Prime Minister of Greece. The Philharmonic Society moved into this building in 1900 after it was located elsewhere in the city before.
Visiting The Museum
Entrance to the museum is free of charge. The exhibition takes you through the history of the society’s existence and you can also learn more about Nikolaos Mantzaros who played an important role in its history.
