The Ioannis Kapodistrias Statue is a monument honoring Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first Governor of Greece, and is located at the southern end of Spianada Square in Corfu Town. The sculpture was created by Leonidas Drossis in the 19th century.
Ioannis Kapodistrias was born in Corfu on 11 February 1776 and became one of the most distinguished politicians and diplomats in Europe. After serving as the Foreign Minister of the Russian Empire he was elected as the first head of state of independent Greece in 1827, a role he fulfilled until his assassination in 1831. At his birth, Corfu was under Venetian rule, while mainland Greece was occupied by the Ottomans, and Kapodistrias is considered the architect of Greek independence and the founder of the Greek state.
